Hi, I’m Fatima Melendez
I am a Mexican artist born in Texas and raised in Chihuahua, Mexico. I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the University of Chihuahua (UACH) and currently live and work in Warren, Michigan.
I am a full-time artist, mother, and wife. I previously worked at the Detroit Institute of Arts as an art studio assistant, an experience that strengthened my commitment to arts education and community engagement. Driven by a passion for sharing my work, I have participated in national and international exhibitions, live painting events, and multidisciplinary art projects.

Community Impact
Since moving to Michigan in 2015, I have shared my work through exhibitions and collaborative projects focused on cultural connection and collective memory. During the pandemic, I was invited by the Mexican Consulate in Detroit to create a children’s art project, which strengthened my relationship with the Mexican community across the state and led to my role as volunteer Art Director for CasArt, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting Mexican culture and art.
In 2022, I launched my Day of the Dead performance project, a live, immersive experience that blends painting, music, and movement. Collaborating with Mexican singer Adel Ruelas and contemporary dancers, I create performances that explore the spiritual meaning of Día de los Muertos and invite audiences to engage emotionally with the tradition.
Each year, I create a new piece to honor my ancestors and reflect the Mexican perspective on death — not as an ending, but as a continuation of love, memory, and identity. Through my work, I aim to build cultural bridges, create spaces for healing, and use art as a living dialogue between past and present.
Latest Project Highlight
This year I have been collaborating on a mural project at the restaurant Cantaritos. This is a collection of murals that highlights different parts of the mexican culture.
